According to an interview with SEGA Europe Brand Manager David Corless by The Sonic Stadium, SEGA apparently has no plans to bring the popular Classic Sonic back after Sonic Generations is released.
Joscelyne asked Corless if he thinks there’s a possibility of seeing Classic Sonic in future games.
“Sonic Generations sees a classic and modern form of the blue blur running around loops in the same game. If the gameplay is received positively, do you think there’s an opportunity to bring Classic Sonic back into future titles?”
Corless replied with the following “brutally honest” answer.
“Do you know what? There are no plans, to be brutally honest, to bring Classic Sonic back. The reason for bringing him back for this game was because this is a celebration of 20 years of Sonic. It was a real fitting time to do it. He’s really well loved. Let’s see how Generations does. You can never say never in this industry, but at the moment there are no plans.”
This could very well cause Classic Sonic fans to become outraged at Classic Sonic being featured in Generations but not in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, an infamous release targeted at Classic Sonic fans entirely.

Doesn’t surprise me mate. They might not even have the plan for the next game lined up yet.
Although like you said, there is Sonic 4 Episode 2.
I guess it really depends on the sales and what SEGA hears from their fans.
Or Sega is keeping it a secret to surprise everyone with Classic Sonic’s revival…
I’m dreaming. :/
Hmm. That crossed my mind too, but they’ve already done that once. But then, they remade the Sonic 2 Death Egg Robo(t) boss twice, too, and I wasn’t expecting it more than once (I was hoping for the S3K Death Egg Robo(t) Boss
)
Anyway, that just shows that there is a chance. And like Franklin said, they probably don’t have any plans for the next game (aside from S4E2) so there is always a chance.
Saw that one coming.
Lol, just hit me. Who else is excited to see Sonic 1′s response to this?
